Six Years Old

Posted by hrgarippa on 25 October, 2006

Today my niece Rachel is six years old. It is hard to believe that she could be six, it seems like just yesterday she was born. She is growing so fast and is so smart and I am so blessed to be her Aunt. Tomorrow night I go to Phoenix for five whole days to be with her and Malia my other niece and Caleb and Jonah my nephews – Oh and my sisters and brother in laws, I like them too!

If I had another life I’d be a Rockette. Yes, a Rockette, the girls that dance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and can kick their legs high, high into the air. I think they are so cool, and glamorous.

So that is why I’m very excited that they are coming to Dallas for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Speaking louder than 50 cent

Posted by hrgarippa on 10 October, 2006

This Saturday is an event planned, separating the middle school girls and boys. Tough boys and girls that see sex, drugs, and violence…you name it they see. The topic of our discussion, Living right before God.

What does that mean, well with the girls we will be talking specifically about sexual purity. Why? Because in this community their bodies are what they use to lure and and “secure” men. Babies usually come next, and babies are what they use to secure income, from the government or from an actual present (in the sense of dollars and cents) father. In this community women have become objectified, they are not longer the respected creatures that God intended. Sex has become a commodity, it is no longer a beautiful expression of love between a husband and wife. Here is an example of what your average kid listens to on any given day:

50 Cent, Candy Shop (warning, explicit lyrics)
You can have it your way, how do you want it
You gon’ back that thing up or should i push up on it
Temperature rising, okay lets go to the next level
Dance floor jam packed, hot as a teakettle
I’ll break it down for you now, baby it’s simple
If you be a nympho, I’ll be a nympho
In the hotel or in the back of the rental
On the beach or in the park, it’s whatever you into
Got the magic stick, I’m the love doctor
Have your friends teasing you ’bout how sprung I gotcha
Wanna show me how you work it baby, no problem
Get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider
I’m a seasons vet when it come to this shit
After you work up a sweat you can play with the stick
I’m trying to explain baby the best way I can
I melt in your mouth girl, not in your hands (ha ha)

And this is just part of the song, it gets worse from there. 50 cent speaks loudly in this community. Most of the boys and girls, most of their parents see him as a “brother” who has acheived what they desire, fame and wealth, he’s looked up to. So when he talks about sex in this pornographic way they listen. He is just one “gangsta rapper,” there are too many to count, producing song after song just like this. Our kids, (not just inner-city poor kids, but kids across all class, and race) and their parents are listening to these lyrics and believing that this is what sex is. Sad.

So, I’m really excited about this opportunity, to share with the girls that God designed sex as a beautiful gift to be shared only within the beautiful gift of marriage. I’m excited to have the opportunity to talk about the way God sees them, that not as “piece of meat” but as his redeemed, child. I’m excited to talk to them about his love and grace.

If one child could see themselves through the eyes our saviour then they could help to change this community.

Last night I went walking with two very dear friends, Sweetpea and L. They were two of the first people I met when I moved to Dallas, over five years ago. All of our lives have journeyed in various directions but I am thankful that we are still in each others lives.

I remember my first birthday here in Dallas I was turning 24, and Sweetpea, L. and several others threw me a pink party, (since my birthday is the day after Valentine’s day). They made me a cake, gave me a princess crown and made me feel so special.

Sweetpea made me this,

A fairly easy piece of artwork to make I’m sure, but something I have treasured all these years. She also gave me one of my first Pride and Prejudice books.

How blessed I am to have such sweet friends.

Over a year ago I had the privilge of meeting my very good friend E’s father JB. What a man. He was a person who truly lived. He lived with many, many physical limitations, but oh how he had no true limitations in really living. He took all that had been given him in life and he used it for the Glory of God. The way he loved his wife, his girls and his grandkids. He loved God’s creation, loved living in God’s world and had complete freedom from every chain this world attempted to place on him.

He died on Wednesday, October 4 and with his death comes a huge void, because his living touched so much and so many. Healing will take God’s grace, God’s kindness, God’s goodness, hope, mercies, love, strength, truth, and courage. God thank you that you heal the brokenhearted.

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet and know even for a short time this wonderful man (who raised a wonderful daughter). It is an honor to have heard his laugh and to have been served his blueberry pancakes.

Kingdom work

Posted by hrgarippa on 4 October, 2006

Where the Light shines brighter, the shadows are darker.

There is a great work being done here in West Dallas. Many ministries are working together to transform this community. So many are faithfully answering God’s call and are being used for His kingdom work. It is encouraging to see! But in all this good work, as the light shines bright for Him, satan is busy. He is discouraging, he stirring up, he is doing well to disrupt the light.

Pray friends, pray for Kingdom work. And be active, be active in what He has called us to, shining His light to this world.

October is here and with it comes Autum, my favorite season. It is amazing to me that once again my thoughts have turned towards Autumn, is it possible that I’ve been blogging for this long?

I love October and Autumn, they bring with it a hope of change and I want to love change. It is what keeps us moving forward, without it we become stagnant creatures who are incredibly predictible. But changes is hard for be, it is easy to become comfortable and routine. In a routine, even if it is a routine that is not desired or even liked life becomes easyand so change becomes nearly impossible.

How do we keep from becoming stagnant? How do we embrace change as it moves us closer to the Father and along our journey of life?
